The mining history in this record
The club began as Darfield St George's, which entered the FA Cup in 1919. The following summer it took the name Houghton Main Colliery, after the colliery near Darfield, reached the third qualifying round of the FA Cup in 1920-21, and joined the Yorkshire League, which it won at the first attempt in 1921-22 with 24 wins from 32 games. It fell to fifteenth the next season, and in 1923 it left for the Barnsley Association League and became simply Darfield. As Darfield it won the Sheffield Senior Cup in 1927 and topped the Barnsley league the following year, but the club was wound up in 1932.
Legacy today
A new club using the old name, Houghton Main, was founded after the Second World War. It joined the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League in 2003-04, won its Division Two and Division One titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12, and left the league in 2024.
