The banner of the Lumley miners' lodge, Durham Miners' Association, made three times, in 1929, 1960 and 2005, each time with the Lion and the Lamb and the beating of swords into ploughshares from Isaiah: the only wholly biblical banners in the Durham coalfield. It was paraded round the Stadium of Light in 2019.
The mining history in this record
Each colliery lodge of the Durham Miners' Association carried its own banner, bearing the colliery's name with religious or political images and mottoes, and Christian themes with a socialist resonance were common. Lumley's lodge chose the same pair of images from the Book of Isaiah three times over, on its banners of 1929, 1960 and 2005: on one side the Lion lying down with the Lamb, on the other swords being beaten into ploughshares. They are the only banners in the Durham coalfield given over wholly to biblical scenes.
On 27 April 2019 Sunderland AFC dedicated its home match against Portsmouth to the Durham Miners' Association, and the banners of ten former lodges were paraded round the pitch at the Stadium of Light before kick-off, Lumley's among them, with music from the Association's colliery band.
