Mines in Somerset
Somerset's lead mining centred on the Mendip Hills, where Charterhouse was one of the very earliest Roman mining operations in Britain, worked within six years of the invasion to help pay the Roman army's wages in silver. Mining here continued on and off for over 1,800 years, its final 19th-century phase resmelting waste left behind by centuries of earlier miners rather than digging fresh ore.
