Ernest le Pelley
Seigneur of Sark from 1839, succeeding his drowned brother Pierre le Pelley III, until 1849. He built the girls' school of 1841 from the profits the silver mine was expected to bring the island, and in 1844, desperate for funds to keep the mine pumping, obtained the Crown's permission to mortgage the fief of Sark for £4,000 to the Guernsey privateer John Allaire, the loan that cost his family the island.
