William Waller's Mine Adventurers

The Company of Mine Adventurers of England, formed around 1698-1700 when Sir Humphrey Mackworth took over and reorganised Sir Carbery Pryse's Cardiganshire mining interests, dividing the venture into 4,000 shares. William Waller, a miner brought in as agent and manager, compiled the company's own detailed survey, 'A Description of the Mines in Cardiganshire' (1704), with maps and plans of its workings. Waller and Mackworth quarrelled in 1709 over allegations of unfair dealing; Waller was discharged and petitioned the House of Commons over the dispute until around 1720.
