William Vizard

A wealthy London solicitor and the chief landowner at Platts Common, Hoyland, who opened the colliery there in late 1840 as the Hoyland and Elsecar Coal Company, at first in partnership with the Earl of Lauderdale and Sir Anthony Maitland. The pit was long called Vizard's, and his heirs leased its coal to the later Hoyland Silkstone companies.
