William Exley & Son

Tile and brick manufacturers at the Rock, Jackfield, from before 1840 until about 1940, and the owners of the Jackfield pit returned in the official 1880 list of collieries at work. William Exley, a Yorkshireman, employed fourteen coalminers alongside thirty-two brickmakers at the works in 1851; the firm made the district’s first encaustic tiles, built one of the coalfield’s first down-draught chimneys in 1876, and opened the Coalport Brick and Tile Works at Gitchfield about 1892.
