William E. Duke

A Jersey-born quarry master who opened Tor Quarry at Merrivale on western Dartmoor in the mid-1870s to supply granite setts for the roads of Plymouth and Tavistock; the quarry was known as Duke's Quarry after him and passed to his son on his death.
