William Crawshay

Ironmaster of Cyfarthfa, one of the four great Merthyr works and for a time among the largest ironworks in the world. He sank Gethin in 1849 not to sell coal but to coke it for his own furnaces — the arrangement that shaped mining across the head of the valleys.
