Whitburn Coal Company
The company that opened up Marsden from the 1870s, buying five limestone quarries there, sinking Whitburn Colliery from 1874, building Marsden village for its workforce and constructing the South Shields, Marsden and Whitburn Colliery Railway. It was bought by the Harton Coal Company in 1891.
