West Hallam Colliery Company Limited

Founded in 1888 when Francis Nicholas Smith of Wingfield Park near Ripley began trading as the West Hallam Colliery Company, and registered at Ilkeston and later at West Hallam. It worked three or four numbered pits at West Hallam for household and manufacturing coal, with pyrites as a by-product, and its workforce rose from 712 in 1894 to 953 in 1910. Smith was still chairman in 1923, when Gordon Gregory was managing director.
