W. B. Lead Co. Ltd

The Weardale/Allendale lead-mining business built up by Wentworth Blackett Beaumont, 1st Baron Allendale (1829-1907), continuing the Blackett family's mining interests, which had passed to the Beaumonts by marriage around 1830; commissioned the Blackett Level drainage scheme, engineered by Thomas Sopwith with W. G. Armstrong. Its Weardale mines closed in 1883 as lead prices collapsed, with leases passing to the Weardale Lead Co. Ltd.
