Tomlinson, Plowes and Company of the Ferrybridge Pottery in Yorkshire leased cobalt ore from Alderley Edge in Cheshire from 1808, part of a brief wartime scramble for cobalt pigment after Napoleon's blockade cut off Continental supplies; the arrangement lasted little more than a year.
