The sinking partnership behind Thornley Colliery: Sir William Chaytor of Witton Castle, Thomas Wood (formerly viewer for the Hetton Coal Company), John Burrell of Durham City, and John Gully — a former bare-knuckle prizefighter, London publican and racehorse owner who sat as MP for Pontefract from 1832. The company began sinking the colliery in 1835 and worked it through the nineteenth century.
