The Fife coalmasters who took a lease over the minerals of the Lassodie estate in 1860 and worked its pits for seventy years, sinking successive shafts eastwards as each seam was exhausted. In May 1931 the company closed the remaining pits, the cost of keeping them clear of water having become prohibitive, and gave the miners and their families fourteen days to leave the company houses.
