Thomas Pulleine
Of Carleton Hall; Master of the Stud to William III from 1689 and High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1697 and 1703. He acquired the Bowes moorland minerals and held a lease of Tanhill Colliery from Lord Wharton in the 1690s; his family dominated coal mining in the district for the next 250 years.
