James Mellor bought Hough Hole Farm in 1796 and built Hough Hole Mill, a cotton-spinning factory, in 1803; the drift mines in the hillside above were opened to supply it, with one entrance in the mill yard. The official 1880 list of collieries at work returns the pit under W. Mellor.
