MineArchiveSub-Wealden Gypsum Company Limited
Formed on 10 May 1876 to work the gypsum seams found by the Sub-Wealden borehole, and led by William Joel Kemp, a local chemist. It combined Leicestershire and Surrey interests — the latter connected with the Dorking Grey Stone Lime Company — and sank the first shaft at Mountfield within sixty yards of the discovery hole. It amalgamated with the Kingston Gypsum Company in 1903.
