Stansfield family of Flockton
William Stansfield married James Milnes's daughter Margaret in 1815 and came into the Flockton collieries; after Henry Briggs left in the 1840s the Stansfields ran them alone. Unitarians, they housed and paid their workers well and provided Sunday schools, a library and allotments — the 'Flockton system'. Mrs Stansfield gave up the leases in January 1894 after her husband's death and the strike of 1893.
