Sir Stephen Proctor

Bought the manor of Bewerley with its mineral rights in 1597, built the village of Greenhow, put up the first recorded smelt mill on Brandstone Beck around 1606 and installed an engine to drain the mines. His father Thomas had patented a new lead-smelting process, which made the family’s money.
