Sanquhar and Kirkconnel Collieries Limited
Formed in 1903 when the Duke of Queensberry's Sanquhar and Kirkconnel coal works -- by then the largest privately-owned colliery enterprise in Scotland -- became a limited company. The firm operated a succession of pits including Gateside (1848), Bankend (1857), New Gateside (1891), Fauldhead (1896, the largest in the coalfield) and Tower Pit (1916), employing over 2,000 miners by 1925, before passing to the National Coal Board at nationalisation in 1947; Fauldhead, the last of its pits, closed in 1968.
