Sir Samuel Kelly
Belfast coal merchant and shipowner who in 1921 began a new colliery at Annagher, promising a thousand jobs, building a hundred houses at Gortgonis and renaming the district Newtownkelly. The coal proved far harder to reach than expected and the venture — the largest coal mining operation ever attempted in Ulster — was abandoned in April 1927.
