Ironmaster involved in establishing the first coke furnace at Sirhowy in 1778; went on to form the original Tredegar Iron Company in 1799 with Richard Fothergill and Matthew Monkhouse, and co-founded the Sirhowy Tramroad Company to carry the works' iron to Newport.
