Ralph Allen
Bath postal entrepreneur and stone magnate who bought up Combe Down from 1726, acquired quarrying rights in 1729, and used his own Bath stone to help rebuild Georgian Bath — Prior Park, Queen Square and the Circus among the results — having proved the stone's quality by building a private tramway down to the city.
