Quarry entrepreneur of Combe Down who led the 19th-century working of the Byfield Mine, built himself Rock Hall in the village and supplied Bath stone to John Nash, the Wyatts and Sir Jeffry Wyatville for Buckingham Palace, Apsley House and the Duke of York's Column.
