Peterborough Abbey
The Benedictine abbey (refounded 966, later Peterborough Cathedral) that held the manor of Barnack and controlled its quarries throughout the medieval period. The abbey licensed other religious houses — including Ramsey, Bury St Edmunds, Sawtry and Crowland — to extract stone, notably in exchange for an annual rent of 3,000 eels paid by Ramsey Abbey in 1150.
