Milnes family of Flockton

Richard Milnes, a timber merchant and maltster renting Flockton Manor by 1764, began the family's coal business in Dial Wood and built the waggonway to the Calder and Hebble Navigation in 1772. His son James worked the Flockton Thick at Caphouse and developed Emroyd Colliery and its ironstone pits, employing more than two hundred by 1799 and dying in 1803 worth over £39,000.
