Mendip Mining Company

The Mendip Hills Mining Company began work at Charterhouse in the Mendips in 1844, employing experienced Cornish miners to sink four deep shafts in search of fresh lead ore, but found the venture unsuccessful and turned instead to resmelting old lead-rich slag between 1856 and 1878.
