Joseph Verdin and Sons

Cheshire salt-manufacturing firm founded by Joseph Verdin (1807-1873), a former River Weaver flatowner and carrier who became, in the words of a contemporary obituary, "the pioneer of his class to enter the salt trade". Under Verdin and later his sons Robert and Joseph, the firm expanded to six salt works across Cheshire — including Marston, Witton, Moulton, Over, Wharton and Middlewich — employing over a thousand people and producing around 300,000-350,000 tons of salt a year, making it Britain's largest salt manufacturer by the 1880s. Sir Joseph Verdin later endowed the Verdin Trust to compensate residents for brine-pumping subsidence and funded the Verdin Technical Schools at Winsford and Northwich.
