Joseph Joel Ellis

Colonel Joseph Joel Ellis (d. 1885) began sinking Ellistown Colliery in 1874, having acquired the lands or mineral rights over a large area around the site, and operated a brick and pipe works on the same ground. The village of Ellistown is named after him, and the official 1880 list of collieries at work returns the pit under his name.
