Industrialist and philanthropist, 1817-1901, known locally as the Salt King. The son of a canal carrier, he leased the failing Imperial works at Stoke Prior in 1857 and bought it in 1867, mechanised it and made it the largest salt works in Europe. He built the model village of Stoke Works for his employees, spent his fortune on the Chateau Impney at Droitwich, sat as MP for Droitwich, and sold the works to Salt Union in 1888.
