John Christian Curwen and family

The Curwens of Workington Hall, the landowning family who worked the coal under their estate on the Cumberland coast and out beneath the Solway. Mr Curwen was the owner at the time of the 1837 inundation, and had been written to about the danger of robbing the pillars under the sea before it happened.
