James Clifford

Lord of the manor of Broseley, who from the 1570s encouraged immigrant miners to settle on the waste and set about exploiting the parish’s coal on a large scale — including, from about 1588, the Calcutts mines on land leased to Richard Wilcox. In 1575 he was found to have dumped large quantities of spoil into the Severn from a pit near the Tuckies, and by 1605 his dealings at Calcutts had collapsed into violent dispute. He built the wooden railway from his mines down to the river at Jackfield.
