The Leighton Buzzard sand company of Joseph Arnold, which opened Double Arches Pit in 1916 when the war cut off Belgian foundry sand, and worked it until 1985. By the mid-1960s Arnold's was the only sand quarry still using the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway.
