Hodbarrow Mining Company
Formed in 1853 when the Earl of Lonsdale granted Nathaniel Caine and John Barratt permission to search for haematite near Millom; ran the mines through their full working life from 1856 until closure in 1968, and built both sea barriers that protected the workings from the Irish Sea.
