Gwaun-cae-Gurwen Colliery Company

Formed in 1874 by a group of Rotherham businessmen, Cleeves, Hargreaves, Sails, Bartholomew and Sellers, to buy and expand the Gwaun-cae-Gurwen anthracite pits; based at Gloucester Chambers, Swansea, with a mineral take of about 5,000 acres by 1915. Lord Rhondda gained a controlling interest in 1916, and the company passed through the Llewellyn and Buckland group to Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries in 1928.
