Greenwich Hospital

The royal hospital for seamen at Greenwich, granted the forfeited Derwentwater estates in 1735 and with them the mineral rights over Alston Moor. It leased the mines, took a proportion of the ore raised as rent, and built bingsteads at Hudgill, Alston and Nenthead to hold it.
