Grand Allies

The partnership of the Liddell, Wortley Montagu and Bowes families that dominated the Tyneside coal trade in the 18th century, controlling collieries and wagonways across north-west Durham; it took the lease of the Beckley, Andrews House and Byermoor coal from Sir Francis Clavering in 1726.
