George Stephenson
The railway engineer, who came to Crich in 1840 to plan the quarrying of Cliff Quarry and the mineral railway to carry its limestone to limekilns at Ambergate, having found coal at Clay Cross while building the North Midland Railway. He superintended the construction of the line himself.
