Edward Gullett

The last tenant of Cann Quarry in the Plym valley near Plympton, who took the lease in 1896 and worked it with four to six men. By then the slate that had made the quarry's name — it had paved streets in Piccadilly and tiled houses in Kensington — was worked out, and only elvan, the hard porphyritic stone, was still being raised. His retirement ended production altogether in 1915; his son Albert carried on briefly before emigrating to Australia. The quarry had been worked from 1874 by James Soper and James Gullett jointly, but nothing on record states how the two Gulletts were related.
