Lead mine lessees in the upper Derwent valley around Blanchland from 1806, who installed steam pumping at Shildon; under Frederick Hall the firm, later styled the Arkendale and Derwent Lead Mines Company, integrated the mines' watercourses, reservoirs and roads and built the district's first crushing mills.
