Earl of Elgin (Broomhall Estate)

Charles Bruce, 5th Earl of Elgin, founded Charlestown in 1756 and built its harbour, its planned village and its limekilns to work the limestone and ship the coal of his own Fife estates. The site remains in the ownership of the Broomhall Estate, which has sponsored the archaeological work on the kilns.
