The Dukes of Bedford
Owners of the former Tavistock Abbey lands from 1539, and of Morwellham Quay and its mineral rights. Their income came less from the George and Charlotte than from royalties on Devon Great Consols upriver — the 7th and 8th Dukes took £182,036 in dues, mostly as an eight per cent royalty on that company's ore.
