David Davis of Blaengwawr

David Davis (1797-1866), born at Llanddeusant in Carmarthenshire, a Hirwaun shopkeeper who moved into coal at Rhigos and in 1843 sank the pit on the Blaengwawr estate at Aberaman that gave him the name he was known by. A founder of the South Wales steam coal trade and an active Wesleyan, he later opened out the Rhondda Fach at Ferndale and formed David Davis and Sons with his four sons early in 1866, months before his death.
