Company of Marblers of Corfe Castle

A guild of Purbeck stone quarrymen and merchants based at Corfe Castle, governing who could work the district's quarries as freemen; its earliest surviving bylaws, renewed in 1651, state they were themselves drawn from older records, and a later Articles of Agreement is dated 1697. Purbeck's stone quarries, Winspit among them, were traditionally worked by freemen operating under the Company's rules rather than by a single incorporated company.
