Formed in December 1887 when seven rival Box-area quarrying firms — Pictor & Sons, Stone Brothers, Randell Saunders & Co, Isaac Sumsion, Corsham Bath Stone Co, R J Marsh, and Samuel Rowe Noble — merged after competition between them had become financially ruinous.
