Where sources disagree, MineArchive keeps both accounts rather than picking one; where a fact could not be settled, the record says so. 3 such claims on 2 records. All regions.
Melton Bottom Chalk Pit
- The quarry has been running for just over a century and supplies high quality chalk to an adjacent production facility making fillers, powders and extenders for chemical and industrial applications, around 300,000 tonnes being extracted a year; it was owned by Omya and producing chalk whiting as of 2012. These figures come from search summaries rather than a fetched page and should be confirmed. (uncertain)
Rifle Butts Quarry
- Opened in the 1860s to provide material for the North Eastern Railway line from Market Weighton, and later rented to the local rifle club until the 1940s. (disputed)
- The site is too tiny to have produced any significant amount of material, and no rifle range or railway appears on the Ordnance Survey map of the 1850s. (disputed)
