Vergon 6

Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

Overview

A small planet in Futurama mined completely hollow for dark matter, the series' starship fuel, by a Democratic Order of Planets mining crew. In 'Love's Labours Lost in Space' (1999) the Planet Express crew go to rescue its animals before it implodes, and learn too late where the dark matter came from.

History

Vergon 6 was once filled with dark matter, so dense that each pound weighs over ten thousand pounds, and so valuable as starship fuel that it was mined out, leaving the planet hollow and on the point of collapse. The mining was done by a Democratic Order of Planets crew, yet the same body's 'Brannigan's Law' forbids interference with undeveloped worlds, so Zapp Brannigan's ship guards a cordon around the planet. Professor Farnsworth sends the Planet Express crew on a tax-deductible mission of charity to rescue its doomed animals. They round up the species, but a creature Leela adopts and names Nibbler eats them all; the planet begins to implode, and the crew escape on fuel produced by Nibbler himself, revealing that the dark matter was his species' droppings. Later stories add that the Nibblonians kept an outpost on Vergon 6 for a thousand years and that the mining was done for Mom under a DOOP contract from 2972, with robot labour.

Workings

Not shown: the planet's dark-matter interior had been entirely extracted before the episode, leaving a hollow crust through which the ground gives way.

Closure

Mined hollow; the empty shell imploded in the year 3000.

What became of it

Destroyed; some animals survived on fragments of its crust.

Canon & adaptations

The original episode says only that a DOOP mining crew mined the planet hollow. That the dark matter was Nibblonian excrement is established in the same episode; the Nibblonian outpost, Mom's contract and the date 2972 come from later episodes and Bender's Game, as summarised by the Infosphere.
