Context During active mining

Cause

The planet's interior of dark matter had been entirely extracted by a Democratic Order of Planets mining crew, leaving a hollow shell that shrank and finally imploded.

Contributing factors

The same Democratic Order of Planets forbade interference with the undeveloped planet under 'Brannigan's Law', so its cordon kept would-be rescuers away from the doomed world.

What happened

Vergon 6 had been mined hollow for its dark matter, so dense that a pound of it weighs over ten thousand pounds and valuable as starship fuel, and its collapse was imminent. Zapp Brannigan's Nimbus enforced a cordon around it. The Planet Express crew landed to collect two of each of its native animals, but the creature Leela adopted, Nibbler, ate all the rest in the cargo hold. As they returned with the last animal the ground began to shake and give way; Fry fell through it and had to be pulled out by Bender. The ship was out of fuel, Zapp would help only if they left Nibbler behind, and the crew resigned themselves to death until Nibbler excreted a pellet of dark matter, enough to fuel their escape as the planet imploded.

Rescue & recovery

The Planet Express crew escaped on Nibbler's dark matter. Some of the planet's animals survived on fragments of its crust.

Canon & adaptations

The date of 13 April 3000 is the Infosphere's; the episode itself gives none. Later episodes add that the dark matter was Nibblonian excrement deposited by a Nibblonian outpost and that the mining was done for Mom from 2972.
