Overview
A brutal, slave-worked mining operation on the planet Kessel, run by the criminal Pyke Syndicate to extract raw coaxium — refined into the hyperspace fuel that makes Kessel notorious across the galaxy — via a rare fissure vent of unstable 'astatic' coaxium beneath the mines.
History
Kessel's mines are worked by enslaved labourers and droids under the Pyke Syndicate. Han Solo remarks flatly that 'mining colonies are the worst' on arriving. Workers are processed on entry through a dehumanising 'clipping and tagging' procedure, and the facility's alien overseers communicate with prisoners only through an interpreter, never directly.
Workings
The mines' most valuable resource is a fissure vent producing raw 'astatic' coaxium, the only known source of its kind, refined and stored in a thermal vault on the mine's lowest level, kept warm enough that the volatile coaxium canisters do not destabilise and explode.
What became of it
Infiltrated by the smuggler Tobias Beckett's crew — including Han Solo, Chewbacca and Qi'ra — sent to steal a shipment of coaxium for the crime lord Dryden Vos. During the raid, the droid L3-37 incites a mass revolt among the enslaved miners and droids, declaring she has 'found her true purpose' and calling on the workers to free themselves; the resulting chaos allows Han's crew to escape with the coaxium as the facility descends into disorder around them.
Recorded claims
Each claim is marked with its basis — explicit canon, MineArchive inference, adaptation only, or fandom interpretation — and attached to the source(s) below. Where tellings disagree, both are kept.
